Green New Deal FAQs

What is the Green New Deal?

The Green New Deal is the best policy proposal that addresses the scope and the scale of the climate change crisis and acknowledges its economic, social, and equity implications. It gives the world the chance to avoid catastrophic impacts of climate change while ensuring a just transition to a green economy within 10 years.

WhY is the green new deal so important?

Climate change is imminent, and we don’t have much time. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said we have 10 years before climate change will be irreversible. If we don’t do anything now, we will face a future of extreme weather events, rising sea levels, melting polar ice, food scarcity, droughts, spread of disease, and MORE. This directly impacts our existence as humans. Disproportionally, this will affect poor and marginalized populations. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic fallout must be addressed at scale, and the GND is the best way to do that (providing jobs, UBI, healthcare, housing, food, and economic stimulus to address the climate crisis, while simultaneously shifting power relationships toward a more just society.

What is the goal of the green new deal?

The primary goal of the GND is to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions through a fair and just transition for all communities and workers. In the process, it aims to provide guaranteed jobs and boost the economy while paying special attention to groups like the poor, disabled and minority communities that might be disproportionately affected by these economic transitions.

WhY is the green new deal so confusing?

The content of the Green New Deal resolution is actually straightforward. However, as Vox laid out in their video, mainstream media often uses “tactical framing,” which focuses on politics over substance, making Americans measurably more cynical and less informed. The dominant framing does not encourage understanding and real discussion about the purpose, urgency, and potential of the GND.
